About this title: In this satirical noir history of the world and of the role of art in history--starring Aristotle and Rembrandt--Heller concludes, not surprisingly, that modern life is absurd and everything has been going to the dogs since the days of the ancient Greeks.

"If you liked Good as Gold, and you like the idea of hearing from Aristotle on history and such, you'll like this book, because it trots out the same sort of rickety framework for what -- in Kurt Vonnegut's hands -- would probably have turned out to be a book of essays that, freed from the need to be a novel, would have been much more entertaining and illuminating."
"This lesser known novel by Heller gets really mixed reviews from people. But, Aristotle Comtemplating a Bust of Homer by Rembrandt is my favorite painting (a review I did of this painting earned me an 'A' in Art History) and this book does a great job of bringing the painting and its history to life albeit in a fictious way. If you can keep track of what's going on in the book, you'll find it really entertaining - I highly recommend it."
"Of the two books by Heller that I have read this is my favorite. If spend to much time thinking about money this book can give you a different perspective on the way we value things. Read in the 1990's."
"This book really confused me. I was expecting what the jacket said it would be, a story that follows a sentient painting through its life from creation to present day hanging in an art gallery. However the jacket was wrong and the story was split into three parts one about Athens, Aristotle, Plato and Socrates, the second about the Dutch and Rembrandt and the third about Modern Day America. It is a history book that follows no timeline. Each chapter can contain parts from each of the three main stories, or smaller asides to other stories. The main themes that seems to bring them together is Money and human shortsightedness and stupidity. Fighting wars to boost the economy, making money by lending money with interest and paying too much money to own the "best" of something. Even though this book was written in 1988 (and spends most of its time in ancient Athens) all the same things seem to be going on today as they have gone on throughout history.
This book was well written, but I don't think his writing style lends itself to a historical novel. At some points in the book I wanted to rate it 5 stars at some points in the book I wanted to rate it 1 star. I guess 3 is where I will put this, though my mind is telling me to rate it higher and lower at the same time."
