"This book starts out fast-paced, and I found myself flipping pages like humming-bird wings to keep up. Jenny Paige, doctor and the new guardian of her younger sister, returns to her home in Snowfield with her sister, Lisa, to find that the entire town is dead -- literally. What happens in Snowfield is far from unique, as we'll find out, one of Earth's oldest secrets. As Jenny, Lisa, and a good portion of the local police force will discover, there's a thinner line than we think, separating the natural from the preternatural."
"I apologize in advance to repeat some of what several other reviews have already said about this book.
To sum it up: the writing was good, particularly at first. The novel became suspenseful quickly and managed to stay that way for some time. But the ending was really weak. Once the nature of the monster was explained, instead of being interesting and creepy, it became boring and rather silly sounding. Also, the fact that the good guys suddenly discover a chemical weapon that can be used against the monster was a little ridiculous as far as I'm concerned.
It's a little too convenient that they finally discover this weapon just in time to save the protagonist, her romantic interest, and her sister (but pretty much no one else, so the author can kill them off in creepy and disgusting ways gradually through the book).
The book started out well, but the predictable and trite ending turns it into nothing more than your run-of-the-mill horror novel."
"What a difference a few years makes. I read this book about 20 years ago when I was still in college and it really creeped me out. I loved it and it became one of my all-time favorite books.
I recently came across an MP3 recording of Phantoms and decided to listen to the book -- re-experience it. The reader was not very good but he didn't ruin it for me. However, I got distracted because certain scenes I expected to find didn't materialize when I expected them. Turns out, in the passage of years I'd re-written parts of the book in my head!
I remembered a small handful of people in Snowfield but initially the Sheriff brings in a group of officers and calls in 10 more the next day. Then the military and scientists arrive later and I'd totally forgotten about them.
In my mind, the scene with Dr. Paige confronting the biker gang happened at the very beginning on her way into Snowfield but in truth was a story told in flashback about midway through the book. Several more scenes, some minor and some major were "corrected" as I listened to the story.
Although I think I would have enjoyed the book a lot, I'm not sure that it would have made my favorites list if I'd read it today for the first time. But it scared me twenty years ago and for that I'll always be grateful."
"This book was banned to the garage. Several members of my family read it and could not keep it in the house. I wasn't scared of the book, but alot of people I met where. Its rather slow paced, but the overwhelming sense of dread more than makes up for that flaw. The book more teases that something bad is going to happen than actually showing it. I prefer more action in a horror tale."
