About this title: Thriller extraordinaire Frederick Forsyth spins a tale based on Gaston Lereaux's classic THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. Set in 1906, twelve years after the tragic, disfigured hero escapes the opera house in Andrew Lloyd Weber's musical version, this story finds the Phantom living in New York City under the name Eric Mulheim and accumulating enormous wealth--first as a con artist, then as a Wall Street tycoon. Still desperate for beautiful Christine de Chagny's love and affection, he spends millions building the world's greatest opera house--a prop that he hopes might lure her to New York. But as ...

"This was basically a fan-fiction take on the musical version of Phantom (somehow I did not expect this of Forsyth) and not particularly well written. The story moves along in separate chapters each from pov of different character which didn't allow for much build-up of emotions or real insight into the characters. I usually like retellings of classic stories and am especially fond of Phantom because of its similarity to Beauty and the Beast but this one fell flat."
"Don't be mislead by the stars, I would say I am glad I read this book and finally found out more about the Phantom of the Opera as a story as a whole. I LOVED book club where we were able to pick apart the story as the movie, the original story, the on stage version and this sequel, all from different authors. The end of the deal is that I think the overall story is kinda wierd, didn't love really any of the characters in any of the stories even though the music will be the only thing I will appreciate from it all. And listening to the tapes I found to be fun on this one."
"I listened to this book on tape (Yes there are still tape players out there) It was Wonderful. Each character had their own voice with the correct accents (i.e. French, New York) played by real actors and actress. I highly sugest listening to it if it is an option."
"As a litte girl I had an obsession with The Phantom of the Opera. From the time I was 4 years old I could sing the Original Toronto Cast Recording Soundtrack from beginning to end (and hit the notes too)! I dreamed of being Christine and was totally in love with the Phantom. To this day, an original copy of the soundtrack is still in my car and 20 years later, I'm still singing along and reciting random lines from the stage production. When I went to see the production again, when it returned to Toronto in 2007, I was in tears as the lights went down, before the first line had been said.
So, when my Nana gave me this book for Christmas a few years ago, I was immediately drawn in. It gave me the chance to return to that place that I had imagined as a child so many times. It was the ultimate book for me, and the ultimate ending/wrap up to a story that had been so important to me growing up, and is no less important to me now. It is very well written with a story line that was completely unpredictable.
An amazing read.... a story that I will cherish forever."
