About this title: A novel about an inheritance dispute in the American South. The McCreas are grown children of a renowned lawyer and his community-spirited wife - liberals whose exemplary behaviour their offspring decline to emulate. The parents' deaths leave the three heirs with a grand Reconstruction mansion.

"Three adult siblings gather to divide an estate and their childhood home after their mother's death. A promising premise from my point of view (I did this recently myself) but the central gimmick--that the author makes herself pivotal by secretly promising to ally with each sibling--is implausible. This novel doesn't have the power of "We Need to Talk About Kevin," one of my all-time favorite books--but Shriver can certainly pick apart the hurts and anger of a family. One character is remarkably like the villainous Kevin, which makes me wonder if there is a real person in her family that Shriver uses for a model."

"In the author's own words "inheritance-in the general sense of what our parents bequeath to us genetically, psycholigically, and morally. How much do we have a choice about what we would keep, what we would discard?" Four stars for the "nuggets of prose" that stop me and make me go "wow that was original", and for the credibility of the story and the people in it. Nearly lost a star for the sudden glibness of the ending, where she feels like she ran out of steam, or paper, or perhaps had a deadline to meet."

"Lionel Shriver is a genius when it comes to describing people and relatinships. The backdrop of this book is a family gathering to probate a will, but the accompanying characters and drama are a lot more involved and interesting than the setting implies."
