"I picked this book up at Zuly's recommendation. Normally I don't like books where murder is involved to any degree, so I was a bit skeptical going into this one.
The author has a unique writing style. The book is written in first person narrative, where the narrator is Nina, the mother. It is also written in third-person from the viewpoint of all the main characters (all of them EXCEPT Fisher, Nina's attorney). In between chapters it also contains little memories written in first person by Nathaniel, the son.
Perfect Match is a story of a mother trying to protect her son. She is a prosecutor and has handled many child molestation cases only to come home one day and find out her own child has been molested. She knows that the legal system does not work in the child's best interest in these sorts of cases, so she decides to take the law into her own hands.
I didn't care for any of the main characters. I thought all of them were completely selfish. The ending of the book has a twist, but it doesn't really make the book any better in my opinion.
All in all, it was a WONDERFUL book. Definitely one of my new favorites."
"Jodi Picoult is one of my favorite authors, and this book has many of the positive characteristics I've grown to love in her books--the novel being told from several viewpoints; suspense; believable, flawed characters--but it just isn't as good as most of the others.
SPOILERS AHEAD! BEWARE!
Here is what bothered me about this book:
- When the novel switched to Nathaniel's point of view, his thoughts (and even some of his actions) were just too sophisticated for a five-year-old boy. I just didn't find his musings about the past and the different conclusions he came to believable.
- Jodi can usually make me sympathetic with and understand her characters and their motivations, but I just couldn't buy the premise that this talented prosecuting attorney would should a priest in cold blood without all of the evidence being in. I could understand her rage at what happened to her son, but it just didn't work for me. And I also couldn't believe that this woman would get out on bail and then finally be acquitted of the heinous crime. I find child abuse absolutely appalling, but shooting someone in a courtroom filled with people would be handled more seriously than it was in the book, I believe.
- I usually like Jodi's surprise endings, but I did not like this one at all.
That being said, the story was still compelling and I found myself staying up late to read more. I LOVED the character of Patrick Ducharme and know that he appears again in one of Jodi's other books. I can't remember which one, but I will be looking for it to re-read the parts about Patrick.
Even with its flaws, I still liked the book and am glad that I read it."
""Perfect Match" is about the mother of a five year old boy who was sexually molested by a well-known figure, and the justice she tries to exact on him. More like revenge. Sadly, her actions begin a rippling effect that starts to tear her family apart piece by piece. It's hard to explain the plot of the story without giving anything fundemental away.
Spoilers, sort of. I loved this book. Definetly one of Jodi Picoult's best novels. First off I would like to say I loved hearing from Patrick Durchame again (I read Nineteen Minutes before I read this one). His character is fantastic, although all the characters in this novel are well developed and deeply inspiring. The plot flowed exactly at the right pace, it wasn't event after event with no stop, but there were no moments where I was left thinking "Uh... is this ever going to end?" I really thought the twists she incorporated were well thought out and strategically placed, which added a lot more to the story. Overall, if I were to recommnd a Jodi Picoult novel for someone to start with, Perfect Match would be near, if not at, the top."
"This book was well written and page-turning with a masterful plot. Picoult developed each character with suspense. However I was irritated with the main character, Nina...she was selfish and I often wanted to kick her. In this book I admired Attorney Fisher Carrington who seemed to be the only one exemplifying healthy relationships. He was a servant and savior. I wanted to give all the others therapy."
