"Figes shows some strong biases and maddening lapses in coverage, but the book reads very well and contains some personal accounts not found in any other overall history of the Russian Revolution."
"Very good and balanced view of the Russian Revolution, it's causes and immediate aftermath. It gave me a lot of detail about the events and causes of the Revolution that I didn't know. It's a pretty depressing book, but a must-read for anyone with a pollyannish view of human progress - it shows what can go wrong in one country, and the repercussions upon the rest of the world. A good antidote to the right-wing views of Pipes and Conquest on one side, and the "it was a great revolution until Stalin ruined it" of the Trotskyites and post-Stalin communists like Roy Medvedev."
"Amazing detailed coverage of the background, lead-up, events of and aftermath of the Russian revolution(s) in 1917.
Only two minor things lacking - a two or three page chronology of major events would have been useful to refer back and be able to put items being discussed into context. Also needs a glossary of terms/party names/individuals which could be referred to in same way.
