About this title: Paul is the most powerful human personality in the history of the Church. A missionary, theologian, and religious genius, in his epistles he laid the foundations on which later Christian theology was built. In his highly original introduction to Paul's life and thought, E. P. Sanders, whose research on Paul has substantially influenced recent scholarship, pays equal attention to Paul's fundamental convictions and the sometimes convoluted ways in which they were worked out.

"I got a lot out of this book! First, it shows that one can dig out a subject from underneath even the deepest accretions of history and conflict and start afresh. Second, it shows that one can approach a religious subject from an academic angle with sympathy and respect rather than disdain and haughtiness. And, third, it shows that Paul can be well-situated in his time and place to better understand his ideas.
The basic thesis that Paul, in his own time and place, was not working with the modern, psychologized, or legalized ideas behind things like "Justification by Faith," is truly powerful. I bet it could even be threatening. But I think we should be brave on these matters. Trust the Holy Spirit, and know that reason and faith are not enemies, but the best of friends.
