"This book started and ended with a bang but lost me in the middle. After the quick start with lots of action, the next 150 to 200 pages felt like filler pages. A lot of them could have been taken out or condensed down and the book would have been better. The last part of the book really picked up though and made for a good ending.
If you are looking for a deep intellectualy book then Patriot Games probably isn't for you. The book focuses on terrorism and is a complete work of fiction. Ryan Jack isn't a super deep character but he is a pretty smart one who wonders a lot about why things are the way they are. He is a good fit for the story."
"I have read and loved this a few times in the past. After talking about them with someone I decided to give it a try. It was different now. I still liked it, but the different political environment, changes in technology and other things make it seem so out-of-date that it was not as fun. I also had a much harder time with the constant swearing. In the end, I doubt I will ever read it again."
"Ok. This book has been on my "currently reading" shelf for 2 months, and here's why: I hate it. I tried really hard to like it, but I hate it. Patriot Games follows a consistent pattern of several action-heavy, exciting pages immediately preceding 4 or 5 chapters of thrilling... bureaucracy, endless details about what Jack Ryan had to drink on a flight, the exact same angsty rant about the line between terrorism and law ad nauseum, and terrorists committing such dastardly acts as selling books. My man tells me that the Clancy novels he's read have all been pretty good, and since I generally have faith in his recommendations I'll be sampling a few more. Provided, of course, I don't have to hear any more about Jack Ryan's drink preferences."
"A well reasoned examination of terror and civilization's response to it and a taut fast paced 200 page action thriller lurk just below the surface of this 500 page bloat. This is great when Clancy is doing action or contemplating the costs of terror on the good guys but sags with endless detail about internal CIA workings and procedural motions by dozens of agencies."
