"A Coretta Scott King Award winner for non-violent social change. This story is very touching as it follows a connection between a young girl, her mother and her grandmother. The cross-generational understanding and appreciation would be a natural connection to make with many of our students who are used to having grandparents around. It's interesting to see how time is important in the book since it takes a year to collect the pieces that will become part of the quilt. It would be interesting to have students identify items that would be important in their families, possibly make a quilt or a drawing that get's connected like a quilt. A great story for the beginning of the year to get to know students or during a family unit."
"This picture book is about the relationship between Tanya and her grandmother. Tanya's grandmother begins making a special quilt from pieces of worn out clothes that have belonged to various family members. Tanya's mother and grandmother spend many evenings working on the quilt. Tanya's grandmother becomes ill, too ill for even Tanya to see her. Tanya worked on the quilt with her mother while her grandmother lay in bed ill. After a couple of months Tanya's grandmother got better and was able to help complete the quilt that she then gave to Tanya as a gift."
"The watercolor painting takes on an almost photographic quality in this book, providing the reader with a snapshot of the activities that are described in the text. The paintings use shading and line to develop texture and depth. The variety of one and two-page spreads all use muted watercolors to convey a feeling of nostalgia and timelessness. The rich details show the reader that the illustrator understands the text fully and contributes elements that make the artwork even more realistic."
"The Patchwork Quilt was written by Valerie Flournoy and illustrated by Jerry Pinkney. It was published by Dial Books for Young Readers in 1985. This is a story about an African American girl, Tanaya, and her grandmother working together to make a quilt. Tanya has been sick and her grandmother has an idea to make a patchwork quilt of memories. Tanya's grandmother explains to Tanya how to create a quilt from various pieces of fabric. They work together, taking pieces of old clothing and costumes to create a quilt full of memories. Then, one day, Tanya's grandmother gets sick and is unable to work on the quilt. The quilt was only about halfway done. Tanya decides that she would like to try and finish the quilt with the help of her mother and other family members. By the end of the story, Tanya's grandmother is feeling better, and the hard work of the whole family paid off by creating a beautiful patchwork quilt. This is a wonderful story that incorporates African American culture and the idea of teamwork together. There is a strong message about family traditions and values, and the importance of working together. Interest Level: Elementary School"
