"I must make an admission...I have been a big fan of John Grisham for a long time. I know that this book was written over a decade ago. I'm still playing catchup with my reading. I have four entire shelves of books to be read and I keep adding to the stack faster than I can read them. Such is the burden of a lover of books. Anyway, as with most of John Grisham's other books, this one revolves around a lawyer and the wranglings of the legal system. I have read all of his novels prior to this one (the others are in the "to be read" column). At 366 pages, it is a pretty quick read. As with all of my reviews of fiction, I won't ruin the ending. The story is of a former lawyer - Patrick Lanigan - turned thief...a thief to the tune of $90 million. Stolen from his law firm after faking his own death. the story picks up from the time he is apprehended, 4 years after he fled, first by those who want the money back and then by the FBI. The story twists around through a web of agendas including his reasons for leaving his wife and child. It is a page-turner that keeps a rapid pace with a great deal of action, especially early on. However, compared with the rest of Grisham's legal thrillers, this one is somewhat weak in two areas. The story is pretty far fetched. A great deal of bungling by an awful lot of people is required for this story to work. In addition, it is pretty predictable, especially from the mid-point of the book forward.
While I would not go so far as to say that the book was a disappointment, it was not one of Grisham's better efforts. In spite of it's problems, though, it is still a good story. If you can pick up a copy at the library or the discount rack, it will give you some good entertainment."
"Picked this one up in a charity shop for my unexpected section. It's really not what I'd normally read, what with all the crime and lawyers and being terribly terribly sneaky, but it's easy to read and I could appreciate the sneakiness. It's a pretty clever plot, I think, with a sting in the tail which actually made me say ouch aloud.
The weird thing about it is that the main character isn't innocent. He pretty much deserves what he's getting, and it's really weird that everything comes up roses for him -- at least legally, and in terms of his plot all going to plan. Maybe not personally. But he's done something really awful -- even once the 'murder' is explained -- and yet people still like him, still do what he needs... it's weird and it's hard to really root for him.
The story overall is a bit dry, but it is kind of interesting trying to follow all the twists and turns. It's a little unrealistic that something could turn out so perfectly, and the sting in the tail doesn't really change that, but it's fun enough. I have a couple of other Grisham books to read. We'll see how they go."
"This book is about a rich lawyer who ran a large, quite successful firm. One day he ran away with the firm's wealth. He ran away with 90 million dollars. He was hiding in South America for a while when he was caught in Brazil. He had heavy lifting to face back in America because all his former partners wanted revenge. The lesson I learned from the book you should never trust anyone, no matter how close you know them. It's ok to trust them but to a certain extent. You should never put 100% of your trust in someone, because they could turn on you at any second."
"At mid way through the book I cannot put it down. This one is addicting, a great story that starts right out. More twists and turns than any Grisham book I've read. This goes down in my book as #1, and to beat The Street Lawyer, that's some accomplishment.
