About this title: The more advances in the social and physical sciences, the more the Catholic Church has to seemingly backpedal to maintain the stringency of its tradition. Wills's book, PAPAL SIN, is an exploration of this phenomenon, a look at the deceit that underlies the piety of one of the largest world religions. A New York Times Notable Book for 2000.

"A really useful supplement in my theological education. Wills puts the papacy in the long context of its history and offers the modern papacy a challenge. I found Wills' book thoughtful and reasoned (also laboriously researched) and handed it around to a number of fellow Catholics. I think he ought to revisit the issue of AIDS and the papacy, however. The Mexico City Amendment and Bush administration policies, together with the Vatican's anti-condom message could add up to genocide. One of Barack Obama's first acts in office was to reverse the ban. But not before an estimated 30-some million people across the globe are HIV-positive."
"Not sure why I decided to read this book. I'm not into religious material and I'm not Catholic. I don't harbor those ill feelings towards the "Church" that so many people that went through Catholic school feel.
Despite that, I enjoyed the book, immensely. The bit of history of Christianity presented here is fascinating. Having been raised in a Protestant household I'm pretty ignorant of the early church. In my mind we went right from Christ to Luther. The connection between St. Peter and the Vatican is totally lost on me. This book gives a glimpse of all that. There's definitely more to it than what I learned in catechism.
More importantly, the book highlights the quandary modern Catholicism finds itself in as modernity rears its ugly head. Why the pope and its followers remain mired in atavistic rules even as the rest of the world feels we've fulfilled our mandate to be fruitful and multiply is laid out here. The calculating steps taken by the Catholic hierarchy to hang onto its power has had a profound effect on our lives before and even now. Banning of birth control is only one aspect of that. There are other issues and one is left wondering how long the Church will last without changing."
"I knew that not all of the Popes met my personal criteria for admirable guys, but Garry Wills certainly gives me more information about how destructive some of them have been."
