About this title: This pastoral love story takes place in a remote country village in Norway, An army officer on furlough falls in love with a local girl who alternately encourages and spurns him. His obsession is only increased by her moods, and eventually he can think of nothing else. The operatic nature of the tale is reflected in the ornate and exquisitely lyrical prose with which the author tells it. It is one of Hamsun's most famous books and was, from the time of its first publication, one of his most popular as well.

"Only 126 pages, but it will seem much, much longer. Once I started a project to read a work from all Literature Nobel Prize winners, but gave up after Hamsun and Lagerkvist."
"On the surface, "Pan" is thin volume about a man who falls in love with a woman, is betrayed by her, goes crazy, and is eventually shot in the face. Initially, I took the book as simply that.
After talking to a big Hamsun fan and reading a little bit of criticism on the book, however, I've developed a larger appreciation for the novel. The narrator's gradual changes and developments are very interesting to the astute reader and the narrator's unreliability (and in some instances, outright lies) makes the book ripe for many interpretations.
Taking the book at face value, I'd probably give it two stars. After scrutinizing it, it deserves at least four. (Hamsun is, after all, a Nobel Prize winner.) They synthesize to three stars."
"Exquisitely executed; psychologically precise; mythical and mythically violent; sensually provocative and tarnished with the human stain. Along with Hesse's "Demian," perhaps a perfect companion to Goethe's "Young Werther.""
