About this title: John Aubrey (1626-1697) was the Bystander of his age, a hanger-on and hanger-out at great houses, a country gentleman of lively intellectual curiosity and unsteady character who left not a book to history but a random, sprawling collection of notes, anecdotes, scribbles and morsels of gossip that have been looted and quoted by scholars ever since. ...

"Another book that hooked me on history--another volume read in my grandfather's library, lost after his death, and hunted down for my own library. I suspect Terry Pratchett read this when very young, too."
"This is better than Anthony Powell's Cresset Press volume. Why? Because the Dick edition is not Bowdlerized. It has John Selden getting 'more by his prick than he had done by his [law] practise.' In Powell, for pudoris causa one assumes, this is rendered as 'more by his marriage...' On the other hand, Dick's book has modern spelling -- an editorial change that makes, for easier reading than Powell's archaic orthography."
