"I have been trying to research and learn about building my own home for about a year. I have read about 6-7 books on building your own home. I know a little about construction and so I am a little intimidated by the process. The book was recommended by an owner-builder friend of mine. This book is excellent.
I was not able to get this book at the library so I bought it and now I am glad that I paid for it.
I am sure that I can build my own home and save a lot of money doing it based on their principles. Mr. and Mrs. Smith do a great job of explaining how to plan and prepare and why planning and preparation are so important.
The main and most important point of the book is, prepare and plan, then manage the project. Much of the book is devoted to how, why, when and where to prepare and plan. They explain how to find and deal with subs. They explain what paperwork is needed to avoid costly mistakes. The also explain why most people are over budget and how to avoid it.
I have heard some horrer stories and some success stories from friends. One of my two most successful home builder friends used this book to completion of their very beautiful house which appraised at a 40% profit margin. After reading this book, I was able to match up the horrer stories of my friends with the mistakes that the Smith's detail and the success stories with the Smith's advice.
I strongly recommend this book for those who want to general their own house. For those who want to do the actual work on the house, this is still a helpful book, but they primarily propose doing no work and just managing the project.
I really didn't see any negative's to the book, it's easy to read and extremely informative. No offense to builders but I have enough friends that have been super successful with their own home and theirs no doubt the savings are huge when you do it yourself.
