"Over Sea, Under Stone is the first book in the Dark is Rising sequence and introduces us to the characters Barney, Jane and Simon Drew who do not appear again till the third book. On holiday with their mysterious great uncle things start to get strange and an exciting quest starts for the three children when they discover in the attic an old scroll carrying a message, a map which they must decipher so they can find the grail, a powerful tool of the light, but the followers of the dark are also out to get their hands on the grail and the children must reach it before their enemies so the light can have advantage in the great and last big struggle of the light and dark last fought by King Arthur and his men. Book Two introduces a new, and undoubtedly the main character Will Stanton, who on his birthday is told he is an old one, a being outside of time and a member of the light and it lies on his shoulders to seek the six great signs of the light. This is where the real action really kicks off. All the books in this sequence are great, the struggles of the light and dark are epic but at the end of the day the burden lies with men, and weather their hearts are open to good or bad. The magic is at times subtle and the way different forces react are extremely interesting. All this is tied up with Arthurian legend and Coopers scenes can be frustrating as well as enthralling. The dark is rising deal with many hard issues of good and bad and what part people play, the forces of dark are extremely sinister and at times the light can seem cold but the children make this book what it is, they are warm, doubtful, strong and feeling and you'll not forget them or the resolute and unwavering guardian - Merry - in a long time. This is a fantastic, highly recommended read. Its so full with action and I'm not the type who reads this kind of books honestly. The arthur Susan Cooper is a great discriber on the characters emotions."
"Did anyone else read The Dark is Rising Sequence as a kid? Well, I didn't. I completely missed the boat on this one, but after hearing about how good they were, I decided to finally give them a shot. I was lucky enough to find a boxed set of the books at a library book sale a little while ago and am now working my way through the series.
I enjoyed this first book and am excited that the series focuses on Arthurian legend for the younger set. I was always a fan of King Arthur inspired books as a child, and so this is kind of a neat way to revisit that excitement as an adult. However, I do feel that the children in this book were rather two-dimensional. I came away not really knowing who they were as individuals and felt that their participation worked too neatly within the plot line.
The only other complaint I have with this book is that (prepare yourself) the edition I have has really bad.... cover art. Yep. You read it right. Not only do I generally dislike it when characters are depicted on book covers, the children on this particular cover all have really weird, creepy expressions on their faces."
"Over Sea, Under Stone is a classic tale with an Arthurian base, showing how kid power can be better than adulthood. It also shows the relationships of the forces of good and evil, and how they can create conflict, sometimes war. Three kids, Barney, Simon, and Jane, go on vacation with their parents to visit their mysterious Great-Uncle Merry (Professor Merriman Lyon), sometimes called "Gumerry". Upon exploring the Grey House, their vacation residence, they find an ancient manuscript crumbling with age. They then join forces with Gumerry to discover the secrets of the yellowing manuscript. Of course, there are people to try and stop them, making their quest much harder than expected. This novel is an exciting and interesting book for all people with a love for adventure and mystery reads. It's one of my personal favorites. Over Sea, Under Stone is a keep-you-on-the-edge-of-your-seat kind of book that will make you tell yourself, "You are going to finish this series, whether you like it or not!!""
"I read this first book in the Dark is Rising series, because The Grey King (#4) is a Newbery Medal winner and The Dark is Rising (#2) won a Newbery Honor. In order to read those titles, I wanted to read the rest of the series in sequence. However, Over Sea, Under Stone was not what I was expecting, so I'm not sure how compelled I will be to continue... I was hoping for magic and fantasy, but there was none of that. It was a contemporary adventure (set in the 1960s, the time of publication) with modern-day characters and believable events. Three children travel to Cornwall on holiday with their family and discover an ancient manuscript in the attic of the house where they're staying. On a quest to find the hidden Grail described in the manuscript, they soon realize the invisible battle between Light and Dark that leads enemies to their heels. The mystery kept me intrigued, but the overall story seemed to be geared toward a more juvenile audience than I was anticipating.
I listened to the audiobook; the narrator read the different voices well but his British accent was a bit heavy."
