"A few friends had recommended the Outlander series of books. I finally took the plunge and was pleasantly rewarded. Ms. Gabaldon has an easy-to-read writing style and her knowledge of Jacobite history and practices comes across in an understated way."
"I am conflicted in my feelings about "Outlander" by Diana Gabaldon. On one hand, Ms. Gabaldon has a high degree of technical skill. 18th century Scotland is brought vividly to life with wonderful attention to detail and historical accuracy. On the other, after 800 pages of adversity and strife, I was exhausted! So much happens in this book that I'm not sure I can handle the sequels, and seeing even MORE terrible things happen to two such likable characters. (Believe me, these characters are put through the wringer).
That said, the author has a gift for characterization. She paints two people falling in love believably, even if the circumstances are outlandish and necessitate serious suspension of disbelief. So, while she may let her plot go all over the place, she does it with such talent and skill that it's hard to begrudge her the epic length and harrowing events.
Then there's the copious sex. It is explicit. Be forewarned. Do not read this on public transportation if you don't like the thought of someone reading over your shoulder. Thankfully, Gabaldon writes well even in the "bodice ripper" passages, so it never came off as tawdry, cheap, or unbelievable, but some people are uncomfortable with explicit descriptions of sex. If that's not your bag, skip this one. Otherwise, get ready for a long, eventful read."
"Historically beautiful and accurate. The details in which she writes draws you into the story so that you feel you are right there with Claire and Jamie. I am on the fourth book and it gets better and better! Definately worth a read."
"I am on the 4th book of this series and I cannot put them down. Dianna Gabaldon is an amazing author that is able to draw her readers into the story. You feel like you are there with the characters and along for the experience. I hope you get this book and enjoy it as much as I did!"
