About this title: In 1925, Henry Beston had a two-room house built on the dunes of Eastham and lived there for a year. His vivid account of his solitary year on Cape Cod has become a classic of nature writing. In 1964, the house was declared a literary landmark by the U.S. government in 1964, but it disappeared into the sea during an abnormally high tide during a major blizzard in February 1978--10 years after Beston's death.

"This is an old book, written in 1928 but beautifully written. You can almost see the waves and the dunes as he describes them. Very interesting and appropriate still today in many ways. I read the book copyrighted in 1949 which says it is the 11th printing."
"i really enjoyed the last chapter, where the author observed a human like he was part of the ocean ecosystem as he had been doing with all the animals.... and reflected on his year on the beach. the rest of it was kind of bland."
"Would like to have seen the Cape back when this was written. Pleasant view of the natural history of the beach and dunes through the seasons. Especially liked his observation that people (even then) no longer embrace the night but rather fear it and keep it a bay with lights. He made me long to see the peace and beauty of true night with no human lights to disturb it. The view out my bedroom window is destroyed by mercury lights from a nearby plaza. Also enjoyed learning about how the Coast Guard worked back in the 20's with watchers walking the beach through the night carrying lanterns to signal when they came across a problem."
"The Outermost House is technically classified as nature writing and memoir, but it's so much more than that. It's almost poetry. Henry Beston intended to spend two weeks at his small cottage on Cape Cod, but found that at the end of two weeks he was compelled to stay, and lived on the Cape for a year, writing about the birds, the changes in season, the fish, and all the natural rhythms he observed from his little home, the Fo'castle. The writing is of luminous quality, and I found myself lingering over phrases such as "I walked in a shower of stars." Calling The Outermost House merely a nature book understates the beauty and power of the descriptions and the lyrical phraseology. This is one I'll read again and again."
