About this title: This detailed and harrowing study of a single group of mostly middle-aged policemen from provincial Germany has achieved classic status among histories of the Holocaust. Far from being demonic and hate-filled sadists, most of the group had no history of anti-semitism or of far right politics. Browning explores the motivation of these men and the ...

"Browning takes you for a gruesome ride in which "ordinary men" become systematic killers of Jewish people during WWII. Very detailed and gory, not for the faint at heart."
"Painful to read but I asked myself many hard questions because of it. You must decide to act based on what you know is right, regardless of what others around you will say or do. "Everyone else was doing it" is an utterly puerile argument."
"Can't imagine why i haven't rated this one before because it's a five star classic. I read it years ago and although it's short it turned my head around. One of the great essential books on the Holocaust. This is not about the camps, this is about the extermination of Jews in Poland before they built Treblinka, Belzec and Sobibor. Who took these Jewish families into the forests and gunned them down? Turns out it wasn't the steely-eyed fanatical SS at all, it was middle-aged police reserve guys, your local baker, pharmacist or gardener who was a bit too old and pudgy to have been conscripted into the army. Just your regular guys. Oh yes, and if they found it too disturbing, shooting men women and children in cold blood week after week, they could ask to be transferred to other duties and that was okay.
