"What a fun, crazy book. I recommend it to anyone who wishes to be amused by the antics of a recently separated woman ("Sam") with an 11-year-old son, who takes on a roommate to help pay the mortgage. The subsequent revolving roommates are absolute characters who add immensely to the drama. Sam's preteen son's indifferent, sometimes nasty attitude is right on (I would know). I loved the other characters in the book as well. Sam's long-distance friend, Rita, is blunt and honest and over-the-top but at least you know where she stands; and her new friend "King" is likable and sweet (the way they meet is quite interesting). What a great friend he turns out to be. King not only hooks Sam up with a temporary job agency but babysits for her as well. The story follows Sam as she struggles with her sadness and low self-esteem after her husband leaves her, how she handles her intrusive mother and grudgingly accepted blind dates, and how she "finds" and finally loves herself. The ending will surprise you. Really. It will.
Elizabeth Berg's writing is similar to Jennifer Weiner, whom I adore. She's witty, funny and surprisingly - very surprisingly at points - straightforward. Throughout the book I giggled like a school girl, grinned like a circus clown or laughed out loud. Can't wait to read her other books.
If there was a 1/2 star, I would probably give it 4 1/2. I don't know that it's worthy of "amazing" (5 stars), but I was definitely entertained and would recommend it to others."
"This was an Oprah's Book Club book so I had high expectations going in. It was okay...a book about a woman going through a divorce. I thought the author captured the emotions of the main character very realistically. We women are strong and brave one minute then crying on the floor in a self defeated heap the next. That part I really connected with. But the story line was predictable and cliche...and I am so tired of books and movies celebrating couples who divorce and then "find" themselves and new life and new love! Gag! I believe that CAN happen while you're still married and bored with your spouse. It just takes a lot more work. Getting divorced I think is the easy choice. It's deciding to stay married and make it work that is hard hard had.
Also, it makes me feel deeply sad for how it affects the children and how neither parent seems to care how their actions change their childrens' lives. That was true in this book so it was a little hard to read because of that."
"Sam must find herself after years of marriage to David and raising 11 year old Travis. She has been dumped, unwillingly and faces up to the financial challenges by opening her home to roommates and thus opening her life and her heart. The first person to move in is elderly and quickly becomes a friend and offers good advice and company. Next is an oddball with a very pessimistic attitude toward life-Lavender something or other. And finally a gay man who becomes a part of the family. Travis goes through his trials and tribulations of making his mother feel guilty for the divorce she didn't ask for and being someone she isn't but he comes through in the end. Sam flounders at first and this makes the book hard for me to get drawn into but as she starts to build her strength, I found my interest grew."
"I'm surprised Oprah chose this one of Berg's books. I much preferred "A Year of Pleasures". Though maybe it is one of those you like best whichever you read first conundrums. This follows a similar pattern (or I guess a Year of Pleasures follows a similar pattern to this) with a woman dealing with the loss of her life-force, in this case, an intact family unit. She starts to cope with her divorce, winds up with an abortion, then falls in love with the new perfect man. If that sounds trite, its because it is. It is also hard to follow the timeline - sometimes it seems like the book has been going on for a year, then you learn it must only be a month or so. The characters are a little flat in their development, a few with interesting details that don't quite round them out. Maybe its because I'm 26 and happily married without children, or maybe its because I can't stand that she oscillates between calling her mother "mom" and "Veronica", but this just wasn't the book for me. Good thing it was a super quick read."
