"Couldn't put it down! Luckily, we're in Maine....I had seen the dramatization of this book on Masterpiece Mystery, but that made it even more fun to appreciate the foreshadowing. This mystery is carefully enough constructed that you _can_ figure out some things before the characters. I also appreciated the every-day office politics of the team and the existential struggles of the detective, though these concerns may be too mid-life for some of my Good Reads friends. And of course, with Elizabeth going to Sweden next week (!) I greatly enjoyed the depictions of Swedish locales and glimpses into Swedish society and life ways. This is my first Wallander, all the rest will be on my "to read" list soon."
"I enjoy this Swedish mystery writer and his main character, Inspector Wallander. The characters are complex and many different side plots go on, as well as Wallander's personal life issues. I enjoy reading these books and then watching the PBS mystery versions. There are three movies so far but Mandell has written more in the Wallander series. Reading in chronological order is best - enjoy!"
"i only gave it four stars because everything before the ending is so good, otherwise i would need to give it s solid three. the ending is kind of a...a lesser thrill than the the rest of the book but i would happily spend some sleepy hous before bed in any one of the Wallander mysteries."
"always best to read the book before you see the movie/TV series - in this case, the PBS mystery show starring Kenneth Brannagh. As a mystery, it slogged a bit, dwelt too long on our hero's faltering health and self-doubt...but unlike other mysteries that get far-fetched in both plot and character, this one is firmly grounded. I actually liked the TV work better - it contained some spectacularly composed shots, and brilliant color variations, and of course fine acting..."
