"This is the book where we get introduced to female-sleuth Stephanie Plum, her mom & dad, Grandma Mazur, Joe Morelli, Ranger, Cousin Vinnie and Lula.
Stephanie had been working in Newark as a discount lingerie buyer but got laid off from her job. Her mother mentions Cousin Vinnie has a filing job at his bail bonds company. So Stephanie goes to check it out, only to find that job has been filled.
However there is an opening doing 'skip tracing': AKA bounty hunting. The job involves finding people that don't show up for their scheduled court appearance. If she succeeds, she can earn 10% of the posted bond amount.
So off Stephanie goes into one madcap adventure after another. This is a great first novel for a great series!
"Learned? This is not a book that teaches. Well, I guess I didn't know that a "bounty hunter" picks up FTA's-"failed to appear" people out on bail who missed a court date. But this mystery series is smart, snappy, and FUN. "The Burg" in Trenton, New Jersey, seems a lot like my city, Buffalo, in enough ways to make the books even more amusing. Actually, Stephanie's mother is everyone's mother, etc. in enough ways to make us all enjoy turning these pages. Very economically written - no wasted words- and lots of wit. The cop Joe is an intriguing character, not least because he is sexy (and since he lusts after her, you know she is too). I have finished Two for the Dough and all the numbers up through Hot Six because the characters are so city-bred (diverse to say the least) and all funny juxtaposed with Steph's slightly old-world mom. My husband read One for... and found some logical holes which I totally ignored as I chuckled. I can hardly remember who got killed but I can't wait to see what Grandma and Lula and Cousin Vinnie will do next! I'm glad a friend told me to try this series."
"Honestly, I really love pulpy series mysteries. I really love them. I can't help it. My mom handed this to me and it was like she offered me crack, and all unknowing, like an innocent babe, I tried some, and now I just CAN'T STOP. Does my mother know that she potentially ruined my life by hooking me on crack, I mean, Janet Evanovich?! I'll have to ask her. Anyway, these are funny, and the main character has a hamster she really cares about, and they're set in Jersey, and there's a good sense of place. I've read 1-4 and I'm trying really hard to wait for my next hit."
