"A very fun and inspirational read--but not sure if the appeal would translate with someone who isn't into the chromosomes of running and of training. Nothing groundbreaking for literary merit, for sure, but it was definitely enjoyable to read a chapter of this at a time.
I could see myself going back to read those last few chapters again and again. For the first time, I was engrossed. Only someone who truly loves and gets running could have pulled off the conclusion."
"This book was written in the '70s. The fictional account of a university miler. It's not so much the storyline as the really solid descriptions of characters and their interactions but most compellingly the running itself that make this book a pure joy to read. Runners' World says this is the best fictional book on running, I don't really have a lot to compare it to, but it's hard to imagine anything getting much better."
"interesting read. especially for someone contemplating taking up running as a hobby or stretching their running abilities to the next level. i thought there were a bunch of great comparisions about the ethos and pathos of running and trying to truly live your life to the fullest. however, i hate reading purely for symbolism and this book has plenty of natural story telling and emotion too. it was short and motivating at the same time. no reason to beat a dead horse, right?"
"I think you have had to do some distance running(on any level)to appreciate this book. He writes like he has ADD, but this just how the mind works in a distance runner.(even a slow one like me)Once you become used to these quick shifts the book hooks you and you can't wait to see if Quenton Cassidy overcomes all the obstacles in his path. Cassidy's single mindedness is something I find beyond me. He literally gives up everything for his moment. I once rode a bus to the start of a marathon, and realized I was the one that was different. They all knew their exact nano seconds, and spilts, and how was the wind was blowing, and how much they should dink, etc, etc, and I just wanted to finish. As I said I can appreciate, but since I am just a jogger I still am reflecting and wondering is it worth it?"
