""On Her Majesty's Secret Service" was my first James Bond book, and it was exactly what I had wanted it to be: fast-paced, reasonably well-written, and enjoyable overall. Bond, as a character, was a bit more introspective than I had expected he'd be, and while the book was a touch misogynistic, it wasn't as terribly so as I had feared going in. While the book met my expectations, it never really went beyond them, thus the three-star rating. I'll probably read more Bond books, as this one was fun, but can't see myself becoming a huge Ian Fleming fan."
"Over the summer I re-read all of the Ian Fleming James Bond books in order of their publication date(don't read any of the junk by others who followed Fleming after he died). Mostly I re-read the books because the re-issue paper-backs had such cool covers. The books are a one day read and absolutely a hoot."
"One thing that strikes me on rereading the original Bond books is how vulnerable Bond is. Far from the efficient Superman of the films, he invariably gets roughed up by the villians, often ending up in the hospital. True, he is ruthless and recklessly courageous (why we love him!), but when not in the thick of battle, he has his self-doubts, his regrets and awkward moments, and in some dialogue comes across as (Dare I say?) a bit of a pansy? Well, maybe that's just his British manners.
In On Her Majesty's Secret Service, he is at his most emotionally fragile, feeling guilty over his string of empty love affairs, falling for a woman and asking her to marry him. But I won't spoil the ending...
Suspenseful, fast-paced and emiently-readable, like all the Fleming books."
