"The Old Steam Navy Vol. 1 (Frigates, Sloops and Gunboats) and it's companion Vol 2 (The Ironclads) are by far the finest books of their type and fill a long vacent gap which begged to be filled. Canney is the best naval technical historian author since Howard I. Chapelle and these books are in my opinion his finest works. They are elegant volumes, rich in detail and brimming with outstanding photos and line drawings. The text is rock solid and complete. As with any good book of this type, the reader will emerge a virtual expert ( it is like a university level class between two covers).
