"Originally published as "Rocket Boys", this edition came out under the title "October Sky" after the movie made from this story.I really liked this book!! This is a true story, written by Homer H. Hickman as a memoir of his life. He grew up the '50's in West Virginia in an Appalachian coal mining town. In 1957 when Russia launched Sputnik, Homer became inspired and obsessed with rockets and his desire to build and launch rockets of his own. His life, and the life of the mining families around him, would never be the same."
"Two of my teacher friends (one who teaches in Cleveland, the other Florida) say that their 8th grade reading classes read this book. I'm always on the lookout for books for class (especially Advanced), so when I came across it at Goodwill (shopping for a costume) I thought it was a sign! I'm not sure how I feel about it...it's pretty long and I think a lot of students would have a hard time relating to 1950's West Virginia. Then again, I think we do a pretty good job of getting excited for hunting in the Ozarks (Red Fern) and 1960's greasers! I'll have to mull it over a little while longer. If any of you read it, please give me your thoughts! :)
"As one of the few books that I have read more than once, this book is fantastic! It delves into the lives of the being in a coal town mine in West Virginia, as both dismal, comical, enlightening, and possibly inspirational. Homer Hickam overcame many obstacles and hard lined perceptions to reach beyond the pull of the mining life and pursue his dreams of being a rocket scientist. I loved this book because as an engineer it reminded me of my own curious mind as a child and my attempts to turn any thing and everything into a science experiment. This book shows that with enough hard work, some good luck, and the help of good people anything is possible."
"I loved this. If you've seen the movie, read the book! This is the story of a young man growing up in a West Virginia coal mining town. The mine controls the town, and when young men finish high school, they either go to work in the mine or, if they are lucky, get out on a football scholarship to college. Homer's brother, Jim, is one of those lucky ones, but Homer, who's no athlete, is still determined to get out of the town and go to college, via the rocket-designing he and his friends are engaged in..."
