About this title: Following his #1 baseball bestseller Summer of '49, David Halberstam gives us the Yankees-Cardinals World Series that concluded the '64 season--a transformational American moment, both inside and outside the ballpark. A book of deep insight and importance, October 1964 is also, like Halberstam's previous baseball work, a great read. Photographs.

"Great book. Very well written. Brought back so many memories. I distinctly remember watching this World Series on TV, and loving it that Mickey Mantle hit 3 home runs in it. Loved reading about Bob Gibson, a complex, fascinating person, as well as pitcher. Highly recommended"
"October 1964 is the story about the two teams involved in the 1964 World Series (St. Louis Cardnials and New York Yankees). As a sports book it's an excellent read, but frankly, it transcends the description of a "sports book".
Halberstam takes us into the locker room and back in time and is able to use the backdrop of the World Series to discuss the era that was the 60's. The differences in race relations on the two teams (and the difference was astounding) and what society was like back in 1964.
So yes, it's a sports book, but it's a whole lot more than that."
"David Halberstam's October 1964 tells the story of the '64 Cardinals and the '64 Yankees and how they got to the 1964 World Series and who won. Halberstam does a very good job of telling the story, deftly weaving in information about the different players, managers and front-office men involved, and of the two teams in the seasons before and after 1964.
It was a very good book. I despise the yankees, but there's no denying that they have a fascinating history, and it was really interesting to read about famous names like Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris and Yogi Berra. Other famous players that showed up included Willie McCovey, Bob Gibson, Hank Aaron, and Willie Mays (yay!). I also liked coming upon other names that I knew, but in completely unexpected contexts. For example, players on the two teams in that era included Tim McCarver (who I know through broadcasting), Mel Stottlemyre (now the Mariner pitching coach) and Bob Uecker (the Brewers play-by-play guy, and a familiar voice in our house now that Josh has access to baseball broadcasts online). While I knew that Stottlemyre had been a yankee, I did not know that the other two were with the Cardinals, so it was a surprise to see their names.
I really like reading books about baseball, and Halberstam is a very good writer. If you like the ol' ballgame and want to check out a good book on it, take a look at either October 1964 or Summer of '49, both of which are well worth your time."
