About this title: In this Part Four of the Nova Tetralogy, Burroughs swerves deeper into science fiction with space battles between the Nova Mob and planet Earth. Here, Burroughs offers the concept of writing as a way of holding out against totalitarianism.

"On the advice of a friend, I got this book from the library. It was the shortest Burroughs book that gets great reviews. I wanted to like it.
But Burroughs is in love with the language of contagion. He is deeply pessimistic, the opposite of Allen Ginsberg. Burroughs doesn't see people as sunflowers. He sees people as ants, teeming in patterns, and resents it. He doesn't believe in change, which is hopeless, but speaking his mind, which is confusing, elliptical, ranting, daring death and disease to prove him right.
Was this pleasurable to read? For a couple pages, yes. Was it insightful? Tangentially. But Burroughs distrusts reality so much even his writing doesn't cohere."
