"Having seen a movie based on this book recently, I was interested in reading it. Parts of it are pretty close to the movie, but others are not. Still, it is an interesting read."
"I vaguely remembered this from the bookshelves in my parents' home. I found it a good read even after all these years--looked it up on amazon and I think it's been reissued under another title. Anyway, it's the story of David, a kid of indeterminate age (I'm guessing, young adolescent) who escapes from a concentration camp to make his way across Europe to safety.
The book gives very few clues about David's background or upbringing --pretty much all we, and he, know is that his name is David and he was raised in the camp. Initially I thought he was escaping from a Nazi camp but realized from clues in the book that he was escaping from an Eastern bloc camp sometime in the fiftes. For some reason unknown to David, the camp commandant has arranged an opportunity for David's escape and a few provisions, including a compass, with basic instructions for the journey ('hoof it to Greece, turn right at Thessalonika, stowaway to Italy...'). The story is of his journey, both physical (through Europe to Denmark) and psychological, as David begins to experience the world outside the bleakness and brutality of the camp. Although hampered by a severe ignorance of the world, he manages to negotiate its challenges, choosing his values along the way, literally and metaphorically finding his way to freedom.
Highly recommended for older children, although Isaac (12) didn't seem too interested. It may be off-putting because its subject is largely David's intense interior landscape rather than the gritty details of his journey.
One thing about the novel I found less-than-believable was David's unrelenting nobility of spirit, given that he was brought up among the realities of the Gulag. --a good example for young people but one I found improbable."
"The story was amazing, but the writing seemed a bit outdated, if writing can ever be outdated. Some of the dialog seemed forced. The story just seemed to quit- not really an ending."
