"Historical fiction/narrative based on a true story/
Nightjohn is about a 12 year-old girl, Sarny, who is a Slave on a plantation in the South. She has no blood family and lives among other slaves on the Waller plantation. One day a new slave, John, is brought in. While John appears to have nothing he comes to the plantation with the ability to read and write. Sarny has a powerful desire to learn and John begins to teach her. Paulsen isn't shy about showcasing the hard and often painful life of slaves and their hatred for those who "own" them. John represents the importance and power of literacy.
This book evoked powerful emotion in me. I couldnt' believe the hatred I felt for the slave-owner Waller. I couldn't contain my urge to want him dead, or worse, to be in the place of the slaves. Paulsen is careful to avoid being overly graphic although some parts are still difficult to read. The power of the story comes through John's dedication to reading and writing. It teaches that life is worth risking to learn these skills as they are the medium to tell the story and tragedy of history. I really like this book. It is a quick and easy read, although hard in context. Very powerful."
"The book Nightjohn is written by Gary Paulsen and it is told from twelve-year-old Sarny.
This book Nightjohn shares the trials of the slaves on the Waller plantation. Sarny, a quiet outsider who can't even remember her mother who was sold while Sarny was still young, is the first to notice Clel Waller's newest slave, who is a man named John. When sarny first saw him he had scars all over his body and he was really dark skined. Sarny learns that John had escaped to freedom previously, but has returned to The South to teach slaves like Sarny how to read and write.
Sarny tells of the abuses some of the other slaves have had to go through on the plantation. This book would maybe make some people have emotions. The only white person shown to any in the story is Clel Waller (The plantation owner) and his family. Sarny's descriptions of him usually include the word `maggot'.
Personally i really enjoyed this book! It got me thinking how fortunatte i am to live n this generation so i wouldnt have to be a slave or be separeated from whites."
"Night-john by Gary Paul-sen is a book about a boy name John who just became a slave. He meets a girl who has a job to chew Tobacco to spit on plants to kill bugs. John wants to trade letters with her job. I cant connect to this book very much because I'm not a slave. But i can connect to this book because i was willing to trade something i learned by myself for someone else's job. It wasn't the smartest move but i had fun trading and learning how to do someone's job. I recommend this book to people who like to learn about people who are slaves and lastly, to learn what slaves to on their own time behind their masters back. This book is awesome i would give this book a 5 because i learned how slaves act when they are not supper vised. And what types of things slaves learn about on their own time."
"The book seems innocent enough from the cover, but once you start to read its a quite shocking portrayal of the slave south. Some of the techniques of punishments that the plantation owners used on their slaves were utterly barbaric. The slaves were able to show a strong and determined resilience under such conditions. I found _Night John_ gripping and inspiring."
