"I had to make a trip for work that would have been about four hours roundtrip, so I went to the library looking for a 'short' audiobook. This one is a little over five hours, and it made my trip.
I've always been interested in stories about the Titanic and this is a good one. The author's research was amazing - he tracked down many of the survivors and/or their relatives and also used the investigations done by the British and the Americans to put together a book that tells the story from the perspective of those who were there. It focuses mostly on those who were in first class, as they made up the bulk of the survivors, but you get tidbits here and there from some of the others, and a lot from the perspective of the crew. You also get commentary from the folk on some of the other ships involved in the story - the California and the Carpethia - as well as what was happening in New York once folk realized that something was wrong.
If you've never read about the Titanic, this will be a great book for you to check out. If you're a Titanic buff, it may not provide any information you didn't already know, but it's still a worthwhile read, in my opinion."
"This account of the sinking of the Titanic gives all the details: the heroism, the selfishness and selflessness, the tragedy, the preventable waste of lives. Anyone with the least interest in the story will enjoy finding out what survivors saw and remembered, and how their experiences changed them."
"A Night to Remember should be on the bookshelves of anyone interested in the true story of Titanic. Published in 1955, highly renowned maritime historian Walter Lord was able to share actual experiences of those who survived this tragic event in the North Atlantic roughly 40 years earlier. Unlike sensationalized versions of this oft-told story, Mr. Lord provides perspectives of passengers from all classes of accommodation, as well as members of the crew, bolstering them with statistics and historical facts. The individual stories bring a human element to the disaster, without the romanticism that typically overshadows most accounts of this dreadful night."
"I was impressed with the detail that went in to the minute by minute of what happened to the Titanic. (the interviews for this book must have been fasinating) I made me understand better than the movie the real magnitude of the disaster."
