About this title: Part fiction, part fantasy, part hyper-reality, this is a story about the Other London, where people live in the cellars and sewers and abandoned Underground lines. It is a London divided into "Baronies", in which the common names of London places take a new and strange reality.

"I love this book! The characters are outstanding and dynamic. The premises of many events are intriguing and many others are amusing. I loved reading about the twists and turns of London Below, where people who fall through the cracks go. Fabulous book from start to finish."
"I recently re-read Neverwhere for a Goodreads book group. While I am an avid Neil Gaiman fan, this is not my favorite Gaiman work. Nonetheless, it is still a very entertaining novel based on amazing conceptual ideas and deserving of 4 stars.
I would rate this as one of Gaiman's weaker works for two primary reasons. Foremost, the story was a mini-series first then novelized and I think it shows. Some characters and plot aspects are flat on the page and I believe they probably had more depth when visually portrayed. I rarely enjoy books written after the television series or movie. It seems very hard to move from one medium into the other since they are so different in the manner of storytelling.
Secondly, I think Gaiman was still getting his feet wet in the world of novels. I'm pretty sure that this was Gaiman's first actual novel even though he was already a well-known author in the world of graphic novels. His writing style tends to go hand-in-hand with the use of a visual medium. I think he was acclimated to having an artist "show" the story while he "told" the story. Therefore, Neverwhere is a bit bland in the descriptive department. In the story, Gaiman has created this amazing world, London Below, and as reader I would have liked to been able to visualize more of it for myself.
All that being said, it's still a fun and entertaining read. As Neverwhere set the stage for my picking up American Gods, a later Gaiman work which I consider to be amazing, I'm certainly glad that I read it and was happy to re-read it."
