The Name Jar is about a young Korean immigrant named Unhei. On the first day of school, Unhei is teased about her name. The students on the bus mock her original name, which means grace, and make Unhei feel very sad. When Unhei reaches her classroom, she tells the class that she has not picked a name yet but will tell them her name by the end of the week. The next day, Unhei finds a glass jar on her desk filled with little slips of paper. Unhei's classmates decided to help her pick her new name and have created a name jar full of suggestions. While Unhei likes many of the names from the jar, she doesn't find one that seems quite right. However, it is only after one boy in her class named Joey learns her real name and compliments her on it, that Unhei decides to keep her own name. In fact, Unhei inspires Joey to select his own Korean name - Chinku, which means friend.
This is a great story because many students can relate to it. Often, students choose more-American names when they come to this country because they want to fit in or because they are embarrased of their real name. This book shows that children should be proud of their unique names because they often have a deeper meaning and show their heritage."
"Unhei is attending school in America for the first time since moving from Korea. She decides to change her name when the students on the bus find her name funny and can't pronounce it correctly. The students in her class try to help her pick an American name by putting suggestions in a name jar.
I kept waiting for someone to suggest "Grace" since that is what her name means in Korean. The illustrations are okay. I like Choi's use of colors, but some of her people are awkward looking."
