"Andre Breton smoothly and seemingly effortlessly incorporates some of my favorite things into a love story: fortune tellers, random footnotes, prison abolition, psychologically questionable doodles, and etymologically inspired nicknames. Breton makes it completely believable that anyone would be swallowed up by the quirkiness and eccentricities of his Nadja; as in... if I met her in a cafe, I would totally let her-- I'd maybe even beg her to-- tell me all about the former men in her life, her lonliness, her failed attempt at a drug deal, and her financial hardships. Like the protagonist, I'd also totally give her a whole bunch of money if she gave me just ONE of her ridiculous sketches. Nadja's an extremeley interesting and awesome character, and the first-person-narrator understandably revolves his story around her as if there were no other way to communicate a point. He's entranced with her as he should be. It seems like if Nadja didn't catch your full and obsessive attention, then you're the crazy one."
"One of the most irritating books I have ever read. Up there with Ayn Rand. Literature shouldn't go posing as philosophy or propaganda, and vise versa. There were maybe four decent sentences total.
"Surrealism was Breton's cross to bear and "Nadja" is considered a difficult yet essential surrealist work. This novella is about a young man's romance with a woman who might be considered a clairvoyant with a borderline personality disorder. Keeping with the tenets of Surrealism, the characters have autobigraphical elememnts that, for some, add an eerie realism to this tale of mad love. Breton was a proponent of automatic writing which produced a stream-of-consciousness style that is prevalent throughout the book."
"We must leave the book, and as "Nadja and Breton", we walk through the streets of Paris ... " It may be that life needs to be decoded as a cryptogram". The encounter with these words during my reading was surprising.
"Nadja" is a reflection of surrealist thought and is characterized by his innovative speech. Reading " The Manifeste of Surrealism " by André Breton is a good introduction to discover this master of Surrealism.
The surreal text claim a special status: its priority is not literary but experimental. The desire of André Breton, when he wrote the story which gives the title of "Nadja", is to share with readers, including his surrealists's friends, like a witness over a period of its existence that has been crossed by wonderful episodes. The text becomes the evidence of the opportunity to direct his life so that it's beyond the rational control and acquire a poetic consistency. The surreal text is intended to contaminate the experience of the readers, which are called upon to test themself the limits of logic, and introduce doubt in the representation of their own future."
