"This isn't a genre that I am usually attracted to, but I find I am much more open to trying books I wouldn't have otherwise due to the sheer volume of audiobooks I have been going through lately. Regardless, I thought the writing style was excellent, with an almost prose-like feel to it. Pretty imoressive given that this is a translation. It remided me a bit of The Bell Jar, in that there isn't much going on in regard to actual events and actions, but there is a breadth of things going on at an emotional level. I would have thought that I wouldn't be able to connect with a charcter that is coming of age in war-torn Barcelona in a time period I did not experience, but somehow I did. I guess certain feelings and experiences transcend time and geographical boundries. I appreciated this book for a variety of reasons: the historical back drop that comes across as real and tangible, the depth of the charcaters and their experiences, the beauty of the writing style. definitly better than I expected."
