"This book is an excellent introduction to Greek and Roman mythology. I started reading some mythology in my middle school English classes and enjoyed it very much. I decided to revisit some of the tales now that I'm older, and picked up Edith Hamilton's "Mythology" to do so.
The tales within the book are fairly short and to the point; even the lengthy quests, such as the "Quest for the Golden Fleece" last less than 10 pages. I've been reading it one or two tales at a time, and that's been a great bite-sized way to read i.t
The only thing that could be held against the book is that in some tales the Greek names for the gods are used, and in others the Roman, so it takes some concentration to keep them all straight. This variation is understandable becuause she ties the tale to the most famous version of the myths, depending on if they were written by a Greek or Roman."
"I never read this book in school, however I did have a section in the grade 5 reader, I believe it was, that dealt with the myths, and they captured my imagination so much that I needed to read more about them as an adult. This book was a great one to pick, as Hamilton writes in a reader-friendly manner, and doesn't drag the stories on and on. She also covers all the bases, from Greek to Roman myths, and even touches on some Norse myths. Very good, should you require a refresher course, or a beginner's guide to mythology, something that won't put you off."
"The first section is about the history behind the stories along with who each God was and their purpose and history and yadda, yadda. It bored me the first time I tried reading it years ago, but this time I bit the bullet and trudged through. Good came of that struggle, because now I am reading the actual stories and much enjoying.
Finally just shelved the thing after weeks of frustration and being completely turned off to reading. It wasn't the stories themselves that caused such a thing to happen but rather the writing being so blah. Nothing ever really happens, and then when it does you tend to miss it because your mind has, by then, wandered to something more interesting. Perhaps in twenty years or so I'll pick it up again."
"I read this in Middle School-- I was a huge nerd and I looooved (still love) mythology. Although, at this point in my development, I think it's a bit slanted to call this book 'Mythology' instead of 'Greek/Roman Mythology' because there are far more mythologies in the world than the slice of mythology this book covers. That said, Classical Greek and Roman mythology is still a passion for me and I found this book impossible to put down-- staying up all night to read and re-read many of the stories even on school days :)"
