"Fascinating reading. CL-S says there was once a tribe that could see the planet Venus in broad daylight, simply because they paid attention to nature and ignored their cell phones. (Pg 18... my paraphrase)"
"About as good as French structuralism gets, I guess. It's a really good and simple read if you're interested in how language organizes us and societies. It's about, quite literally, how culture is *shared*."
"Levi Strauss (only distantly related to the jeans) is a stuctural anthropologist, who here clearly explains how he looks for order behind disorder, and how he doesn't think we can find meaning without order.
I read some of his work in Wendy Graham's Lit Theory class, but I'll level with you, about 95% of that went over my head until now.
One of his more interesting chapters goes over how he doesn't believe in a binary between "primitive" and "civilized" - he thinks the distinction is more accurately thought of in terms of "with writing" and "without writing". I like."
"Overview of Levi-Strauss' ideas regarding structuralism. The text was originally a lecture in English so the ideas are quite accessible as opposed to much of his writing in French. Lots of great information and tons of examples to illustrate structuralist thought."
