"As a fan of Jane Austen, I've enjoyed Northanger Abbey and had wondered about all the Udolpho references. I was unable to force myself to continue reading it after page 400 something. I found the prose lovely for the first three or four pages and after that very repetitious.
For my taste there was not enough action to balance the description. I also had a problem with not really caring about any of the characters, except perhaps the French maid. The heroine's propensity to faint when the going got tough was perhaps what was expected of genteel young women of the time, but I found it extremely irritating.
If one were on a desert island and it was the only book available, I'd say read this book. Otherwise, I could not honestly recommend it."
"One of the most terrifying Gotic stories of its time? I'm not too sure about this, because I found little in The Mysteries of Udolpho which really made my hair stand on end. I think what truly prevented me from liking the novel was the angelic, virtuous heroine who, when placed in a difficult situation, did one of three things; cry, faint, or cry and then faint. Her complete lack of self-reliance was far too unrealistic, even for Radcliffe's time, and I found it a drag principally because of the irritating heroine.
Perhaps a modern perspective prevents me from finding the novel too terrifying; the true horror in Radcliffe's day may not have lay in the ghosts, blood or corpses but rather in the actions of the characters. I'd be tempted to call it 18th century moral propaganda."
"This book was as close to a horror novel as I ever want to get! Even though the ghosts and most of the murders were imaginary, I couldn't read it in a dark room, or be alone. Yes, you can skip most of the poetry, (although I do like some of it), and a lot of the tears, and it still makes sense. I think that this book really has a lot of potential, and I did like it quite a lot. Why I chose to stay up late to read it however, I will never know. I kept having to stop and shine a light around my dark room, to make sure nobody was lurking in the corners. On the whole, I liked most of it, and I was quite satisfied with the ending. The story line was really good too, I thought. I think my favorite people in the whole book were the maid Annette and her sweetheart, Ludivico."
"The Mysteries of Udolpho is a gothic romance/mystery set in the 1600's but has the feel of an early nineteenth century story. Like Emmaline and Evelina, The Mysteries of Udolpho has a pre-Austen feel with the way woman are treated (as property)and the constant fainting of the heroine, Emily St. Aubert.
That said, Ann Radcliffe weaves an enchanting and engrossing tale with multiple enticing settings in France and Italy.
The sweet and innocent heroine, Emily, is matched up against a whole host of truly evil characters and while the reader is screaming for her to poison almost everyone in her midst or, at the very least, run away, Ann Radcliffe is busy pulling the reader further and further into her world. The mysteries (and there are many) are all satisfyingly, and, at times, shockingly unveiled.
I can usually guess where the story will travel but this one had me stumped to the end."
