"I really really wanted to like this book. Perhaps I expected too much. I wanted the artist Chaplin to speak, but instead got discourse regarding dinner meetings and the like. Sure, that can be interesting, but I wanted to read about his methods, ideas, and hopes. I think since Oona was able to read it, Chaplin probably censored the book on some level. I didn't expect scandals, but there were some events that I think he could have gone deeper.
My favorite part of the book was the beginning for this very reason. He discusses the hardships he went through- working life in London, dealing with his ill mother, and the like. It was very human and gave a window into his creative ideas.
Regardless, I enjoyed it, but am looking forward to reading some of Robinson's work, which I heard is the best on the subject."
"I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I was interested in the man and how he became such a world famous pioneer of silent films. At the start the account of his childhood in Victorian London is heart-rending. The discent of his mother into mental illness which lead to him spending time on the streets and in the workhouse was tragic and the young charlie learnt to be resilient at a very young age. Even when he became a celebrated artist and returned to London, his love for the city was evident. At times his style of writing is formal and a bit stilted but the life he lead was so fascinating this is a small criticism. The list of amazing people he met and grew to know included such emminent names as Einstein, Debussy, Mack Sennett, Valentino, Churchill, WR Hearst and many others. An amazing life and a joy to read."
