"I'm sure I missed many of Beckett's references. Otherwise I'd have given it five stars. The fault is mine. It's not exactly a page turner but very funny and dry. The prose changes from brief, almost half exchanges, to precise description. The action was vague but that's the point, I'm pretty sure. I found it fascinating, but I'm have a weakness for the portrayals of life as real and unreal and the line between. Even so, even considering what happens in a small world of characters that all know each other and all speak to a different beautiful human weakness, I was impressed by how these people survived. No rent money. Circling the town in case a job appears until one does that's perfect for Murphy. Nobody eats anything. Murphy buys a packet of digestive biscuits and one point but a dog eats his favorite.
The dialog is funny and memorable. This is a book I will return to: it quickly sends you to tumbledown place that's both cozy and squalid.
It was Beckett's first novel and really, if you like his plays, you'll love the novel."
