"I think Judy Grahn may be charac terized as a radical feminist/lesbian poet. She is also a professor, and may be many other good things, but was certainly not known as a novelist. Thus it was with extreme surprise and delight that I came across this little story twenty years ago and declared it one of my all-time favorites. Hey, I'm an old man, and the story seems aimed at pre-menarchal girls. No matter! Ernesta is of that age, member of an unnamed tribe in an undefined tropical area. She copes in the way of young heroines everywhere, and achieves menstrual maturity by the conclusion. Along the way is magic. Ernesta is the protaganist in HER scenes, but Ms. Grahn's sweeping searchlight dwells with equal attention on other people and, well, the Greedy Oak Tree (for it drinks all the water about it), the Fly Born With Little To Do (of which failure to learn from first experiences is one of its primary characteristics, but achieves apotheosis swarming with its mates), the Poison Plant which waits patiently for its inevitable and fatal encounter with woman.... These non-human protaganists are not Disneyfied; their essence is brought out in Grahn's all-encompassing ecology in a way Tolstoy could wonder at. Every girl of this age should read this book. So should everyone else. Some parents might want to shield their little girl from the delicate descriptions of sex and death. But she won't be a little girl for long, will she?"
