"Given the approach of the 40th anniversary of our first touchdown on the moon, I thought this book would be appropriate. I'm pretty familiar with the U.S. space program of the 60s, but this was still an informative and fun-to-read narrative from two men intimately involved with the program. While they tried to maintain an objective, third-person writing, the story is clearly about Deke Slayton and Alan Shephard. That's not a bad thing! It really added flavor to my understanding of the development of the space program, and talked in more detail about many of the individual missions of Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo. The conclusion of the book is with the Apollo-Soyuz link-up, in which Deke Slayton finally got to fly in space. It's a touching account."
"This book was my one, single big push into pursuing a career in the Astronomy/Space Exploration field. You'll feel like you know these guys after you read it. The Mercury 7 and all of the other pioneering astronauts were some great people. Definitely worth the read. Very informative from a really personal standpoint."
"A great book, about an intersting time in history. I had to read this in 11th grade back in 1996. It is still a good one that I pick up from time to time."
