About this title: In Jane Smiley's satirical novel, Moo University, a vast Midwestern aggie school, is populated with schemers, dullards, losers, fornicators, frauds, and the few sensible souls who see through them all--including some very appealing animals. The book is not only a traditional academic comedy, with its bureaucracy, student-teacher interactions, and petty politics (Smiley claims it's based on Iowa State, where she was a teacher for many years), but a sly critique of higher education in America.

"The description "Dickensian" is often given to Smiley's books and in the case of MOO, I think it is merited. MOO is the abbreviated name of a Midwestern State University, where Animal Husbandry and Horticulture have equal status with Maths or Modern Languages. The book demands concentration as, chapter by chapter you are introduced to perhaps a hundred significant separate characters, with new ones appearing until you are a third of the way through - and such characters - idiosyncratic, opinionated, beautiful and bizarre. I wanted to say to Smiley by the end of chapter three. "OK stop now. These ones are more than enough. I want to know more about them, how things work out. Don't tell me about new people." However, if you stay with it, it all works out, the good are rewarded and the evil appropriately punished and it is all enormously satisfying. The version I read was from the library, but I think I will borrow it again in about six months and re-read it with great pleasure"
"I couldn't finish this book. Perhaps because it seemed like a put-down of Iowa State University (Moo U, as it is also known). At the time I read it, I was working in fund-raising in higher education, and I was really offended by Smiley's portrayal of the corporate relations development professional in the story (who slept with the prospective corporate donor, or at least it was implied). The characters in the book seemed overdone and almost cartoonized - like the characters in the movie "Fargo.""
"I got bogged down in the middle and picked it back up several months later, but still an amusing, and accurate account of life inside academia. I like that she's pretty wide-ranging in her coverage of university life without over-reaching. Even the discussions of the students and their lives struck true. I love Chairman X and the agriculture/horticulture war."
"So many types... --the gigantic pig: born to eat --the powerful departmental secretary: surreptitiously funding library search engines so she can know all --the aging radical horticulture chair: the clash in worldview between horticulturist and agriculturist --the farm boy --the black low-income Chicago girl --the ambitious sorority girl"
