About this title: This brief but revered self-help classic was written by a 19th-century Englishman who devoted his later years to contemplation. Allen borrowed the title from the Biblical verse, "As a man thinketh, in his heart, so is he." In a clear and accessible argument, Allen builds on the idea that one's thoughts shape one's character, and also one's circumstances, environment, and destiny. Allen's practical philosophy stresses responsibility: "Man is made or unmade by himself." But he also clearly values those who are dreamers, and he sees the ultimate goal of his spiritual practice to be serenity.

"This author was recommended to me by a friend. It was short but awesome, very thought-provoking (no pun intended ;) People truly do underestimate the power of their minds, which the author spells out in his book. This book is full of gems of wisdom, here is one of my favorite quotes from it: "that man is the master of thought, the moulder of character, and the maker and shaper of condition, environment and destiny"."
"I read this in my homeschool mothers' book group. When I went to buy the book at Deseret Book and found it in the inspiration section, I actually didn't buy it the first time. But, then I did some more research online as to what the book is and ended up buying it and reading it twice. It is a quick read, but deep, so a second reading helped. In a sense, it is a precursor to "power of positive thinking" books, but is more than that. In the book group, we often end up talking about outstanding characters who work to have their "public self" match their private self. (Think Atticus Finch) This book touches on that. God wants you to succeed gloriously, and the power is within you. A man can be cursed and rich or he can be blessed and poor. We have our agency to decide."

Please visit www.BookCrossing.com/716-7329695 to make a quick journal entry, then pass the book along to someone else who will appreciate it. We can all track this book's journey and the lives it touches forever more!"
"A great book with deeply profound principles. The author uses soothing and poetic words of wisdom as he espouses his thesis that we are the makers of ourselves. The book is spiritual in nature, though not religious. I've found a great deal of inspiration with words like these: "A noble and Godlike character is not a thing of favor or chance, but is the natural result of continued effort in right thinking, the effect of long-cherished association with Godlike thoughts." To the degree that we accept this idea and others like it will be the degree to which we accept the fact that- if we think right, which is within our power, our lives are likely to be "right" as well."
