"My favourite book as a kid. Grover tries to plead with you not to turn the pages because the title of the book says there is a MONSTER AT THE END OF THIS BOOK and he is so afraid. He tries to brick up pages, but you turn it and you've busted his bricks down. So he ties up pages, begs and pleads, does whatever he can so that you won't get to the end of the book... and the monster at the end of the book is revealed as being... Grover himself. And he is now very embarrassed.
It's an adorable and wonderful book still and I play on buying for my new brother and sister so they can fall in love as much as me :)"
"How amazing is this book? One could fall into lengthy discourse concerning the book's relevance to child development with it's early scratchings of reverse psychology, knowing sadism (why must we distress poor Grover with every page turn?!) and the sublime obliviousness of youth. Isn't there a bit of Grover in all of us, clueless as to how the rest of the world sees us, forgetting who we are and how we come across, struggling to stop the inevitable?
No? There's not? Well, that's fine too. I'm just in it for the muppets."
"Normally I steer clear of books about TV characters because of their low story quality. This story, however, is a hilarious page-by-page running joke, in which Grover, after reading the title, begs the reader not to turn the pages because he is afraid of meeting the monster. He erects barriers to page-turning which are destroyed as pages are turned, and when the last page is turned he discovers that he is the monster referred to in the title.
The humor turns on the fact that the author draws attention to the book context of interaction by having Grover directly address the reader, and by depicting physical objects ostensibly intended to block the pages from turning. Children will tremendously enjoy the feeling of knowing something Grover doesn't know, and will savor the situation comedy of Grover's failed attempts to resist their overwhelming page-turning force. The story ends with a moment of delicious irony in which Grover claims "I told you and told you there was nothing to be afraid of," but then his thought bubble appears: "Oh, I am so embarrassed."
This book does come in a board book format, but by the time a child is ready for this level of humor they will have outgrown board books, so I recommend the paper version."
"I was just at $1 book store and was thumbing through some books for my kids. I saw 3 huge stacks of Little Golden Books. Some I already have....Disney ones. But I came across this one. Talk about blast from the past. I can remember reading this one at least 5 times a day to my younger brother when he was 2-4 years old. (I am 6 years older than he is) He loved this book. So of course I had to get it for my daughter. And.......she loved it. She got a huge kick over the whole thing and had me read it twice and then went over to my husband and had him read it a few times. I saw a few more there. Maybe I'll go pick up one for his girls too."
