About this title: Dallas Younger, a star athlete in high school, has fallen on hard times. His ex-wife Annie is locked in battle over her sick father's care. And Randall, their son, is learning that in a town like Mohawk it doesn't pay to be too smart. Richard Russo's first novel is a classic portrait of American small town life in the second half of the 20th century.

"I've read several of Russo's other books and in this, his first novel, the themes and setting are very similar. So much so, that I found myself getting confused about which characters were in which book. However, his novels are enjoyable and I often feel like I know his characters. This is a portrait of small-town upstate New York, in a state of economic decline, and the problems that populate the lives of the people of the town. Empire Falls remains the best of his novels, in my opinion. Here, the characters were a bit flat."
"This was a real disappointment. He also wrote Empire Falls - a book I didn't want to end! This was a gloomy tale of the residents of a small economically stressed manufacturing town. I almost put it down unfinished, but I kept hoping it would get better - it didn't."
"This was Russo's first novel, published almost 25 years ago in 1986. While it was interesting to read Russo's first book knowing what an accomplished writer he has become (I adored Empire Falls), and while Mohawk had moments of keen observation, this one began to drag for me around the halfway point, and I almost gave up about 3/4's through. This is a tale about the inhabitants of the upstate New York town of Mohawk, which has become trademark Russo territory. It seemed unnecessarily choppy, and at times overwhelmingly dark, with not enough to balance that. Clearly Russo has grown since he wrote this."
