About this title: A book that spurred a countless number of horse-owning fantasies, MISTY OF CHINCOTEAGUE was first published in 1947, and is still one of the most popular horse stories ever written. Inspired, in part, by actual events, this fictional work begins with a band of wild horses surviving a shipwreck and swimming their way to Assateague, a deserted island off the Virginia coast. Before too long, the horses and their progeny fully populate the island and roam upon it freely. Years later, the people of nearby Chincoteague Island begin holding an annual event in which some of the wild horses are ...

"As a child, a book about horses spirited me away to a land of my dreams. I had a rather weathy Aunt who knew this and would bestow on me each Christmas and birthday a gift to stir my imagination and passion. This is the first book she thought I would like. I must have read it 20 times. It was followed by others like Stormy Mistys Foal, Man o War and Justin Morgan had a Horse. I can still recall my enjoyment and the goose bumps from jumping in and losing myself in the pages."
"This is a book I probably would have enjoyed more when I was 7 or 8, horse lover or not. The writing style would have appealed more to me then. It wasn't bad, but as an adult I found myself a little bored. And there were only 2 parts in the story that I was really interested in. The rest was predictable and all right. I think my horse-loving niece would find this one ideal. And I did enjoy hearing places mentioned that are not far from me--indeed, a place I'd like to visit sometime soon.
Not the biggest fan of the narrator (he was the same one who did "Poppy"). I don't like most of the voices he uses, and some of the inflections that he gives."
"**21 august 2009** We stopped at Chincoteague on our road trip up the coast this past week; I have read this and other works of M. Henry, but I didn't recall the story and wanted to, so purchased the book while there.
**23 august 2009** Finished this yesterday; I thought I had read this before when a child, but I guess I only knew of it...interesting. I definitely have read others of hers, notably King of the Wind, which I remember absolutely loving. This one was not quite as engaging...fun, but definitely dated, as well. So a bit slow for my tastes. But, I always have a special place in my heart for horse stories. :)"
"In fourth grade I was obsessed with this book and with "Brighty of Grand Canyon," by the same author. Anne and I would play horses at school for hours. Then in fifth grade I moved to Ames and no one played horses, they played a game having to do with who could be the most popular. I was not successful in this new game, I missed Anne and the horses."
