"This book kind of smacks of Rebecca/Jane Eyre -- a mysterious house with a tragic past. The girl is sent as a governess, but falls deeply in love with the master of the house, etc. BUT, I am a sucker for that kind of story, and, while I have my doubts about the ability of a previously total philanderer to become a devoted and faithful spouse ultra quicly, I still thought it had a good ending and really enjoyed the read."
"This is my first Victoria Holt book (I guess she's a famous romance/ mystery author?). I liked how it was written, it's a good mystery and it definitely creeped me out at times. I wish there was a little more development with the love story, but I liked it enough to try some of her other books."
"This book reminded me of Jane Eyre which is a favourite, and I loved that the ending was able to surprise me. Not as well written as Jane Eyre, but still a great enjoyable read. I had a hard time putting it down."
"A fairly predictable book that closely resembles Jane Eyre's plot, Mistress of Mellyn was still an enjoyable read, especially if one is looking for a book that is considered a "romance" novel minus the gratuitous sex scenes. What I really liked about the book was that it had a distinct "old school" feel to it, which is probably because it was published nearly fifty years ago. It didn't hurt that I read a forty year old copy of Mistress of Mellyn that I had borrowed from the library. It had been re-bound, according to the stamp on the inside front cover, in 1969 and it had a great library/old book smell to it."
