About this title: In this fin de siecle parable of class tension and gender war, a wealthy woman engages a man on her staff in a summer's night of passion, including fights, sex, dreams for a shared future in which their social differences won't matter, and disillusionment when they realize how stuck in their lives they really are. This play was written in 1888.

BTW I would totally be up for seeing tons of productions and interpretations of this, because essentially it's a strong great dirty central concept, I cannot deny it. However, I would like to not read it again if that's OK because the reading was really irritating. Probably a better translation would have helped, though, sorry Dailylit, and the canon."
"This is a great play that I've always hated that I taught this summer. I now have a new found respect for it after the discussions I had with the prisoners. We discovered that Jean and Julie are both sketches of different parts of Stridberg's personality. I've always hated this play because I hate the character Julie, but when thinking of her as the part of Stridberg that loathes and loves women...I can't help wanting to give it another thought..."
