About this title: Thich Nhat Hanh's personal missives are an outstanding supplement to other scholarly texts on relaxation and meditation. Originally written as letters to friends, THE MIRACLE OF MINDFULNESS is an intimate and inspiring small book that instructs the reader on the deceptively simple subject of breathing. Subtly based on an ancient text, the Anapanasati Sutra, also known as the classic guide to the mindfulness of breathing and meditation, Nhat Hanh casts this ageless idea into a contemporary context for readers of any faith. "If you read this book at the right time in your life, it might transform you. That's what happened to me (Although it's only been a few weeks). Every time I think to wash the dishes to wash the dishes, or to do x only to do x, and while only thinking about x, it leads to a joyful, mindful presence that I didn't know was possible before."
"Interesting. I like the ideas behind mindfulness (many similar sentiments are expressed in "How To Be Idle," as Julia pointed out when she recommended this book to me) and meditation (anything that helps one relax is a good idea to me). However, I honestly don't know how to reconcile the goal of being as mindful as possible every moment of one's life with my desire to be as oblivious to my surroundings as possible when I'm at work..."
"This is a beginning guide to meditation written by a Buddhist monk from Vietnam. While it indicates it is a beginners manual, I find the concepts very deep and difficult to deal with. The most important concept from my first reading was that I do not pay attention to what I am doing. I eat and read, or think and plan about the future. Therefore I am not aware of how much or how fast I eat. I need to learn to slow down and meditate on what I am doing."
