Description: Good. Red with gold writing. Edges and corners are a little shelf worn. Some interior markings, in pen, pencil and/or marker.; In his earthly ministry, Jesus preformed many miracles. In particular, he healed numerous diseased and disabled bodies. But perhaps his greatest miracle was the healing of people's souls-the forgiveness of sin. Jesus still offers that miracle today, and on the same terms as formerly: sincere repentance. This book is a penetrating explanation of repentance and ... read more
"This is a hard book to review. The teachings it contains are intense and controversial. President Kimball depicts a rough road from worldly ways to a Mormon sense of purity and righteousness. Even by many who love the book, it is often regarded as a painful read. Its high place in the literature of Mormon culture cannot be underestimated and should not be dismissed. It is not canonized Mormon scripture, but for many, it might just well as be.
Among the books contributions to Mormon thought is popularizing the belief that Cain was (and is) a large black man. It also underscores that righteous Mormons are working not toward mere salvation, but to exaltation as Gods and creators of new worlds. Anything less is a form of damnation.
Deeper doctrines aside, the book's recurring message is that repentance is a difficult and painful process; and if it were anything less, it wouldn't be valid. Though I no longer practice Mormonism, I'm forced to admit there is wisdom and truth in that notion.
People wanting to understand contemporary Mormonism would do well to read this, and/or other writings of Spencer W. Kimball. He remains a powerful figure in shaping contemporary Mormon thought. His words are firm and unapologetic. For the believer, there is hope for something glorious on the other side of an arduous process. For the skeptic, there is a great deal to find troubling and problematic."
"this book has several problematic issues. The main one being that is is just silly bigotry. Masturbation leads to homosexuality? Homosexuality leads to bestiality? Is Kimball for real? I am amazed at the numbers of raters to 'love' this book. Are they saying they actually believe such nonsense? I have yet to see (and i am 100% sure i never will see) any and i do mean ANY proof that such statements have any truth whatsoever. And -if the book promotes those two lies, than i can only assume that one should be cautious about what other lies the book contains.
kimball was not a prophet simply because he fails the 'test' of a prophet. he spoke lies. period.
i gave it one star because i couldn't give it anything less. This book is a complete waste of time and energy. don't bother with it."
"WOW! This was so wonderful. I'd been a bit hesitant to read it because I was told it made you feel guilty, and "guilty" always has such a negative connotation. It definitely made me look at myself, and helped me recognize some weaknesses, but I wouldn't say "guilty" was the general feel. Motivated to improve is a better way to say how the book made me feel, and I REALLY feel motivated. He wrote the entire book out of love, and that really comes through. After the scriptures, I think this would be possibly the best book for a person to read who honestly wants to improve their life. I learned a lot, too. He delves deep into understanding the Atonement, and he also explains some subjects that are generally less understood like the sons of perdition. This really was a remarkable book. I recommend it to everyone."
"This is a wonderful book. It gives you a little bit of tough love in the beginning, but if you can stick it out, the ending is beautiful. I learned so much from this book"
